Media Advisory: A conversation invoking the legacies of Sanusi Credo Mutwa and Chief Albert Luthuli

20 July 2023

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission has partnered with the Centre for Applied Legal Studies and the Nelson Mandela Foundation to host a day of dialogue, memory and nation-building, reckoning with the “July Unrest” by invoking the legacies of Sanusi Credo Mutwa and Chief Albert Luthuli. The convening will take place on the 21st of July 2023 - Sanusi Credo Mutwa's birthday and the anniversary of the passing on of Chief Luthuli.

Join us in dialogue facilitated by Professor Tshepo Madlingozi from the Centre of Applied Legal Studies between Nkululeko Luthuli from the Chief Albert Luthuli Foundation, and Mhleli “Mthunzi” Linda from the Credo Mutwa Foundation. A special tribute performance will be rendered by iPhupho L’ka Biko.

This collaboration forms part of the South African Human Rights Commission’s Social Harmony National Effort initiative (ShiNE), which is being rolled out in each of the Commission’s 9 Provincial Offices to inspire positive dialogue and to address the deep structural causes of the immensely unsustainable state of our country. The KZN leg is in response to the July 2021 Unrest and the April 2022 floods.

The theme for the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Office is “Poverty (material, spiritual, relational) in our midst robs us all of our collective dignity.
