By inviting the use of Clay to interpret the meaning of recent disasters, the uKhamba Youth Pottery Exhibition and Competition aims to primarily advance the spirit of social harmony through the following means, amongst others:

1. To recognise the importance of nature (the earth) in containing and advancing human rights discourses, and fostering harmony;
2. To recognise the importance of the creative arts in processes of social and collective healing, and in advancing human rights discourses;
3. To involve young people in the national conversations affecting our society;
4. To contribute to the memorialisation and archiving of the narrative of the events of July 2021 and April 2022;
5. To foster communality through multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Participants to the Pottery Exhibition and Competition stand a chance to win various prizes, including Book Packs / Book Vouchers; Workshops with globally renowned ceramists including Clive Sithole Ceramics (Durban, Phansi Museum), Andile Dyalvane, and Zizipho Poswa (Imiso Ceramics, Cape Town); Exhibition of winning works at the “Life and Times of Nelson Mandela Exhibition” (Nelson Mandela Foundation, Johannesburg).

The Commission and its partners therefore call on interested participants that are 18 years old and below to make their submissions as per the following:

1. Any Physical Clay Artwork or Pictures thereof (5 pics, all sides/ angles) / Video of the Clay Artwork (Show all sides/ angles).

1. Written Submission       -      Full names and ages of the participants.

• Full details of a parent/ guardian, including contact details.
• Brief description on the artwork and its meaning/ reflection on the July Unrest and the April 2022 Floods.

Top 10 participants will be selected to advance to the second phase of the Competition, from which the top 5 finalists will be selected.  A further shortlisting process will result in the top 3 winners being selected.
