Media Advisory Gauteng Provincial Office Conducts a Visit to Tembisa Hospital

    Attention: Editors and Reporters

    08 August 2023

The South African Human Rights Commission Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) will visit Tembisa Hospital on 08 August 2023.

Tembisa Hospital is an accredited general and specialised hospital in the province of Gauteng. The hospital renders services to Tembisa township which has a population of about 2.5 million people, as well as surrounding areas in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane.

The visit follows reports of overspending by the hospital and alleged hijacking of the procurement processes and subsequent suspension of the Chief Executive Office in 2022. In addition, in December 2022, a video circulated on social media showed a half-naked patient sleeping on the floor at the hospital.

In December 2022, the Commission was advised that the hospital had a shortage of staff members, overcrowding problems, and an aging and dilapidated infrastructure.

The visit will take place as follows:
    Date: 08 August 2022
    Time: 12h00
    Venue: Tembisa Hospital
