Media Invite: SAHRC Mpumalanga Office hosts a capacity building workshop on mental health

Attention: Editors and Reporters

16 August 2023

The SAHRC in Mpumalanga will be conducting a human rights capacity building workshop for traditional healers’ organisations under the theme “Promoting and Protecting Health Rights”.

Mental health is a public health problem in South African society today. People with mental health conditions are exposed to a wide range of human rights violations. The violations include the stigma and discrimination that often result in such people being excluded from receiving healthcare services and from leading full lives in communities.

The workshop is mainly targeting traditional healers, like any other community-based organization traditional healers are extensively consulted by communities on treatment of mental illness. The aim of the workshop is to equip them to have general understanding of common mental illness signs and symptoms and be encouraged to work closely with medical practitioners to ensure appropriate management of the illness.

The workshop is envisaged to be held as follows:
Date: 17 August 2023 09:00
Time: 09h00 to 15h00
Venue: Premier Hotel, White River

Ends
