Media Advisory: SAHRC North West Provincial Office to convene a subpoena hearing against the HOD of North West Department of Human Settlement and the Municipality Manager of Ngaka Modiri Local Municipality

Attention: Editors and Reporters

19 September 2023

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) in North West to convene a subpoena hearing against the HOD of North West Department of Human Settlements and the Municipal Manager of Ngaka Modiri Local Municipality.

The subpoena hearing is in respect of the Commission’s investigation into the complaint lodged by the South African Communal Federation (SACF) regarding water, sanitation and housing challenges at Straatsdrift and Tshwaro Farms within Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

Last year, the Commission conducted site inspections and convened several engagements with stakeholders in an effort to respond to the pressing water, sanitation and housing challenges that the residents of these farms are contending with. Whilst some departments responded positively to the Commission’s efforts, the Commission did not enjoy the cooperation of the North West Department of Human Settlements and Ngaka Modiri District Municipality necessitating the planned subpoena inquiry.

The subpoena inquiry will be held as follows:

Date: 20 September 2023

Time: 09h00 to 13h00

Venue: NWPO offices, 25 Heystek Street, Rustenburg.
