Media Invite: SAHRC Mpumalanga Office hosts capacity building workshop to empower religious structures of statelessness in Mpumalanga

Attention: Editors and Reporters

26 October 2023

The SAHRC Mpumalanga Provincial Office will be conducting a capacity building workshop to equip religious structures on the right to citizenship enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (“the Constitution”) with specific focus on statelessness. This workshop is conducted in collaboration with the Mpumalanga South African Council of Churches which is established, amongst others, to address issues of justice, national reconciliation, integrity, and to contribute towards the empowerment of all those that are spiritually, socially and economically marginalised.

Section 20 of the Constitution states that no citizen may be deprived of citizenship. Furthermore, the Constitution protects the right to a nationality from birth and provides that everyone has a right to a name and a nationality at birth. The right to a name and a nationality includes the right to birth registration, identity, citizenship, and proof of that identity and citizenship.

The workshop is aimed at equipping religious structures with information and knowledge on legislative provisions regarding citizenship. It is also intended to highlight measures which are intended to address statelessness. The workshop will be held on 26 October 2023 at Matsulu Municipal Chambers in Matsulu outside Mbombela from 09h00 to 14h00.
