Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape initiates Inquiry into Provincial Road Infrastructure

Attention: Editors and Reporters

17 November 2023

The South African Human Rights Commission’s Eastern Cape Office has received numerous complaints highlighting human rights violations caused by subpar road infrastructure in the province. The diverse landscape of the Eastern Cape brings about challenges in many areas, with roads posing limitations to residents' accessibility.

To address these concerns, the Eastern Cape Provincial Office will commence with an inquiry into road accessibility within the province. The primary objective of this upcoming inquiry is to pinpoint the root causes and challenges associated with inadequate road infrastructure, with a focus on identifying areas for improvement. The aim is to inform the development of sustainable and efficient measures for road infrastructure.

Through the inquiry, the overarching goal is to advocate for positive change by recommending targeted interventions, influencing policy reforms, and enhancing overall accountability in road infrastructure management. This inquiry reflects the commitment of the SAHRC to address the concerns of affected communities and drive meaningful improvements in the Eastern Cape's road infrastructure. Stakeholders who have been requested to appear before the Commission includes the EC Department of Transport, Education, Provincial Treasury, COGHTA, Transnet, SANRAL, RAF as well as civil society stakeholders.

The inquiry will be held as follows and will be LIVESTREAMED on our YouTube Channel:

Date: 20th – 24th November 2023
Time:  08H30am – 16H00pm every day
