Wednesday, 06 December 2023

The 10th of December marks the commemoration of International Human Rights Day (IHRD). The day is globally observed annually in remembrance of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by United Nations General Assembly on the 10th of December 1948. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHRC) is a milestone document that proclaimed the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human beings.

The UDHR, in turn informed the various legal systems and constitutions across the world which recognises human rights. This milestone document provided the foundation for our very own Constitution within South Africa, a Constitution which provides the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/ the Commission) with its mandate to protect, promote and monitor the attainment and observance of the human rights enshrined within Chapter Two of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights. Furthermore, International Human Rights Day, coincides with the signing of the South African Constitution.

The Commission recognizes the significance of this calendar day commemoration, and that it also gives us all an opportunity to reflect on human rights and the ongoing journey for its realization both here in South Africa and within the rest of the world.

This year’s International Human Rights Day Theme is “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All”.
