This theme is significant as it goes beyond recognition for the idea of children as the future and seeks to build an environment of respect for human rights by equipping children with knowledge of human rights and empowering them with skills to learn different ways of engaging. In a society where social cohesion is noticeable by its absence and where positive role models for youth are sorely lacking, engaging youth and children on choosing role models and giving them a voice on issues relevant to or affecting them, is important. The WCPO had through a Dialogue in Bloekombos, Kraaifontein in October 2023 commenced a process of allowing children to lead conversations on issues affecting them.
The SHiNE launch under the theme of “Positive Role Models for Children”, allows the voices of children to finally be heard and taken into consideration in matters affecting them. This launch will culminate in a process of further empowering learners to become SHiNE ambassadors in their schools where they can take leadership roles in the resolution of conflict relating to diversity. The programme conceived of by the Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, Ms Fatima Chohan is an innovative game changer and seeks to address the underlying causes of social discord by encouraging introspection. The SHiNE programme at the Cape Town Arts Festival will include training on mediation as a mechanism which can be employed in times of conflict by the learners in their schools and homes.
