The Gauteng Provincial Office commemorated this day by highlighting the experiences of community human rights defenders. These are human rights defenders who operate at the community level, assisting their respective communities to fight for their rights and freedoms. The provincial office viewed this commemorative initiative as an opportunity to raise awareness of the work done by community human rights defenders who are often at the forefront of promoting justice for all people. The work done by human rights defenders often exposes them and their loved ones to threats and acts of violence from both the community and state entities.
The Gauteng Provincial Office has put together a short video of human rights defenders expressing their experiences while undertaking the task of achieving dignity, freedom, and justice for all.
