Monday, 15 January 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or the Commission) remains concerned with the ongoing floods that affected Ladysmith, Dundee, Mandeni and more recently those that occurred over the weekend in parts of the KZN North Coast and other surrounding areas, as well as the adverse weather conditions (heavy rains, whirlwinds, and lightning) which continue to affect parts of the KwaZulu- Natal Province.

The Commission will be conducting monitoring on 18 and 19 January 2024 in the Ladysmith, Dundee and surrounding areas to assess the impact of these floods and adverse weather conditions on the affected communities as well as the relief being provided to them. The Commission will also be conducting further monitoring in the Province’s North Coast region which was devasted by flooding over the weekend.  Following its monitoring the Commission will be engaging with all relevant authorities to ensure that the situation is addressed speedily and appropriately. The Commission accordingly appeals for the observance of human rights in responding to the on-going floods and adverse weather conditions, which continue to affect our most vulnerable communities.

The Commission calls on the Provincial Government and relevant stakeholders to ensure their continued and rapid responsiveness to this on-going crisis.

The Commission further calls on communities to exercise caution during these periods and to aid their fellow residents where possible.
