Media Advisory: The SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to conduct monitoring during the schools reopening for the 2024 academic year

17 January 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) in the Northern Cape Province will be conducting monitoring during the schools reopening for the 2024 academic year. The main objective of this monitoring initiative is to evaluate the current state of human rights in education, emphasising aspects that directly impact on learners, parents, and educators.

The monitoring will focus on the following key areas:

  1. Admissions for learners in Grades 1 and 8:
    • Ensuring fair and transparent admission processes.
    • Addressing any reported cases of unfair discrimination or practices.
  2. Costs related to stationery and uniforms:
    • Investigating the financial burden on parents for essential school supplies.
    • Assessing the impact of these costs on the right to education.
  3. School infrastructure:
    • Inspecting the condition of school buildings and facilities.
    • Identifying areas that may hinder the learning environment.
  4. Shortage of Teaching Staff:
    • Evaluating the adequacy of teaching staff in schools.
    • Addressing concerns related to teacher shortages and its impact on the quality of education.

The SAHRC is committed to ensuring that every child's right to quality education is upheld, and this monitoring exercise will provide valuable insights into areas that require attention and improvement.
