Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to conduct monitoring the state of readiness for reopening of schools

17 January 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will be conducting monitoring of the state of readiness for reopening of schools. Section 184 (1) (c) of the Constitution of the Republic states that the Commission must monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic. The role of monitoring and assessing human rights and potential human rights violations, provides for an opportunity for the Commission to inspect areas of potential violation, and facilitate redress where required.

The Commission’s focus areas in its monitoring are, inter alia; the adequate allocation of teachers to schools, the timeous supply and delivery of Learner Teacher Support Material (LSTSM) to schools, the infrastructure of the schools, the availability of water and sanitation facilities, readiness to provide meals through the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) to qualifying learners, readiness to provide transport to qualifying learners and the admission policy of learners, including learners without documentation. Schools will be informed of the Commission’s “School Uniform and Appearance Policies” Report.
