MEDIA INVITE: SAHRC hosts a three day provincial visit in Mpumalanga

The South African Human Rights Commission will be hosting a five day provincial visit from 20th to 24th June 2016 in Mpumalanga.
The overall aim of the provincial visit is to promote the work of the Commission particularly in the area of Socio-economic rights within the Mpumalanga Province.

The purpose is to assess the state of service delivery and the state of accessibility of healthcare services in the province. The visit will also strengthen relations between the SAHRC and the Provincial Legislature as well as addressing challenges faced by the Provincial Office in its relations with Municipalities and Provincial Government Departments.

The provincial visit will be held as follows:

  • The first day (20/06/2016 @ 09:00 – 11:00) of the visit will focus on a site visit to Sizanani Informal Settlement community leaders in KwaBuqwa, a meeting witheMalahleni Municipality to assess the state of service delivery in the area, From (14:30 – 16:00) Unannounced Inspection at Middelburg Public Hospital to assess the conditions of access to healthcare services
  • The Second day (21/06/2016 @ 10:00 – 12:00) will focus on a meeting with Bushbuckridge Municipality and Tribal Authority regarding the Gauteng High Court eviction judgement of 08 June 2016, From (13:00 – 15:00) meeting with affected Arthurstone community members regarding Gauteng High Court eviction judgement of 08 June 2016.
  • The Third day (22/06/2016 @ 09:00 – 10:30) will focus on a meeting with the MEC of Department of Health to feedback on visits that took place at Mapulaneng, Rob Ferreira and Middelburg Hospitals in Nelspruit last year, (10:30 -12:00) meeting with the MEC of Department Cogta regarding the Arthurstone Court Judgment, from (16:00 – 17:30) meeting with the Community of Thaba Chwewu affected by evictions
  • Fourth Day (23/06/2016@ 10:00 – 12:00) meeting with Department of Home Affairs and Naas community, Komatipoort on Blocking of Identity, from (13:00 – 16:30) visit to the Farming Community in Nkomazi
  • Fifth day (24/06/2016 @10:30 – 12:00) meeting with Speaker of the Legislature on strengthening relations between the SAHRC and the Provincial Legislature as well as addressing challenges faced by the Provincial Office in its relations with Municipalities and Provincial Government Departments, from ( 12:00 – 13:00) Media Briefing on the outcomes of the visits (venue to be communicated during the week) and from ( 15:30 – 17:30) meeting with the affected Lily Mine families

SAHRC Chairperson Lawrence Mushwana will be leading these discussions as the Commissioner responsible for promoting and protecting human rights in this province.
