Media Alert: SAHRC Mpumalanga Provincial Office conducts Provincial Executive Stakeholder and Community Engagements on the Rights of Children

In October 2023, The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission), Mpumalanga Provincial Office (MPO) conducted an information gathering exercise, and found detailed, shocking, and worrying pregnancy statistics which were shared by both the departments of Health and Education where children as young as 11 years of age were reported to be pregnant and some tested HIV/Aids positive.

This therefore necessitated the Commission to conduct engagements with provincial governments, community members and other stakeholders to raise awareness about the malpractice of the phenomenon of ukuthwala/funelani nganeno which is masqueraded as a cultural practice. The abuse of the practice is a grave violation of children’s rights, and various sections of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act.
