Media Statement: Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi’s visit to the Eastern Cape and briefing on the School Uniform Report in Parliament

Attention: Editors and Reporters

05 March 2024

In commemorating Human Rights Month, Professor Tshepo Madlingozi, Commissioner of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), will undertake a visit to the Eastern Cape Province Office (ECPO). The ECPO will be facilitating a series of activities within the Province, with a particular focus on matters relating to education and equality, the focus areas of Professor Madlingozi.

In kicking off Commissioner Madlingozi’s inaugural visit to the Province, he will be presenting a synopsis of the SAHRC School Uniform report's findings and recommendations during a parliament briefing before the Portfolio Committee of Basic Education. This session, which will occur at 09h30 on the 5th of March 2024 will be introduced by the Chairperson of the SAHRC Commissioner Chris Nissen.

A further significant initiative this week involves raising awareness around the lack of scholar transport in certain areas of the Province. The Commission notes, through complaints, monitoring, and media reports, the absence of scholar transport services leading to adverse consequences such as students dropping out, financial burdens, and undertaking excessive and potentially hazardous journeys to reach their schools. The Commission invites collaboration in raising awareness through participation in an awareness walk in various locations, capturing moments via video or photographs, and using the hashtag #WalkForScholarTransport while tagging the Commission’s social media pages.

In addition to these activities, the schedule includes a meeting with the Eastern Cape Legislature, a calendar day guest lecture, and a stakeholder engagement, as set out below:
