Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to conduct monitoring in the Joe Gcabi District Municipality and stakeholder engagement in Cwebeni

11 March 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission's (SAHRC) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) is embarking on a crucial mission: monitoring children’s rights, police stations and the school uniform report recommendations at schools in Joe Gqabi District Municipality. Section 184 (1) (c) of the Constitution empowers the SAHRC to monitor and assess the observance of human rights throughout the country. This includes inspecting areas of potential violation and seeking redress where necessary.

Further, the ECPO is convening a stakeholder engagement to address reported human rights violations in the Cwebeni Community, Port St Johns. The engagement follows distressing complaints, particularly stemming from regional flooding incidents, affecting over 100 families in Cwebeni.

The violations reported include:

  • Protracted Lack of Access to Clean Water
  • Homelessness and Inadequate Housing
  • Malnutrition and Starvation
  • Lack of Sanitation
  • Restricted Healthcare Access
  • Issues faced by Undocumented Residents

The SAHRC, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, aims to facilitate dialogue and action to tackle these pressing human rights concerns. The engagement will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to share insights, propose solutions, and commit to collective action towards resolving these challenges. Following the engagement, there will be a walkabout in the community to provide stakeholders with an opportunity to witness firsthand some of the reported human rights violations.

The activities will be conducted as follows:
