Media Alert: The SAHRC, Limpopo Provincial Office to meet with Vhembe District Municipality following the Municipality’s non-submission of its plan to ensure efficient water provision to communities as a water service authority.

Date: 19 March 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Access to water is essential to everyone’s health, dignity and prosperity. In recognition of the fundamental importance of water, the Constitution entrenches the right to have access to sufficient water.

It is important for municipalities appointed as water services authorities to fulfil their crucial and direct role of providing everyone, particularly vulnerable communities, with access to water.

It was in response to systemic challenges relating to water provision that the SAHRC in Limpopo released a report on the 16th of October 2023 after an inquiry into access to water and the efficacy of water service authorities in the Limpopo Province. The inquiry was held because of an increasingly concerning number of complaints received from members of the public regarding their lack of access to water. The report contained several recommendations directed at all the water services authorities in the Limpopo Province.

One of the recommendations in the report is for water services authorities to submit plans on how they are planning to ensure water provisions to communities within their jurisdiction. The SAHRC in Limpopo intends to meet with Vhembe District Municipality for the municipality to account for its non-submission of the plan to ensure water provision to communities within the jurisdiction of Vhembe District Municipality.

The meeting is scheduled as follows:

Venue          : SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office, Boardroom.

Dates           : 19 March 2024

Time            : 10h00

**Ends**
