Media Advisory: The SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to conduct a Strategic Engagement on Children who are in conflict with the law

26 March 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) in the Northern Cape Province will be conducting a strategic stakeholder engagement on children in conflict with the law. Children in conflict with the law refer to individuals under the age of 18 who are alleged as, accused of, or recognised as having infringed criminal law. Their involvement in illegal activities poses significant challenges to their well-being, rehabilitation, and successful reintegration into society. Factors such as poverty, social inequality, lack of access to education, and exposure to violence exacerbate their vulnerability to engaging in criminal behaviour.

Children in conflict with the law are among the most vulnerable and marginalised groups in society. Their rights, well-being, and future prospects are often jeopardised due to their involvement in criminal activities. Addressing their needs is a moral imperative and a fundamental aspect of upholding human rights principles.

The commission recognises that addressing the complex needs of children in conflict with the law requires a multi-faceted approach involving various stakeholders. By bringing together various stakeholders, the commission aims to develop comprehensive strategies that are more effective in preventing recidivism and promoting rehabilitation.

The engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date    : Tuesday, 26 March 2024

Time   : 09:00 AM to 13:00 PM

Venue : Garden Court Kimberley (120 Du Toitspan Road), Kimberley

Ends

Prepared by the Northern Cape Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission.
