Media Advisory: SAHRC Western Cape Provincial Office reminds parents that the closing date for the application for Grades 1 and 8 learners is 12 April 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

11 April 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (Commission) Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) reminds parents who have not yet done so that the closing date to apply for admission to grades 1 and 8 for the 2025 academic year is on Friday, 12 April 2024. Parents are urged to avoid waiting until the last minute to ensure opportunity to address application challenges that may be faced.

The Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) online application system has been developed to ensure that everyone is given a fair opportunity to find placement for their children. The sooner parents apply for placement the quicker the placement process can be finalised. Early placement will ensure that learners are timeously placed and do not miss out on teaching and learning hours while awaiting placement come the 2025 school year. The right to education is important, and as such parents are urged to play their role in ensuring that learners are afforded the opportunity to exercise this right.

For any challenges encountered with the online application system the WCED has established a helpline which can be accessed on 0861 819 919. Assistance to make the necessary applications is also being made available until the deadline at schools, Shopping Malls and libraries. Available assistance is listed on the WCED website.

The Commission takes this opportunity to urge parents to make use of the available resources for addressing any challenges with making timeous application, to ensure that by the start of the school year in January 2025 as many learners as possible would have been placed. The media is also requested to assist in the protection of this right by publicising the deadline and available assistance in the Western Cape widely.

The WCPO will monitor the process and is available for any enquiries related to challenges being experienced which could pose a threat to the enjoyment of the right to education.
