Subsequent to monitoring activities, the Free State Provincial Office drafted a report which raised several issues which affected learners and a safe learning environment. Some of the prevalent issues include learners having to cross over a spring full of raw sewerage spillages when going to school, dilapidated infrastructure, and blocked toilets. This report was shared with the MEC for Education in the Free State, Mr Makalo Mohale and a subsequent meeting to address these findings / observations or concerns was held on the 19th of February 2024.
As a result of the Commissions intervention, the Free State Department of Education made a substantial progress, in implementing corrective measures. The Commission is pleased to note that the department’s current plan has a focus on addressing schools’ infrastructure challenges.
