The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Commissioner Sandra Makoasha supported by the Limpopo Provincial Office (LPO) visits Mashao Secondary School where a learner allegedly took her life after being bullied by a teacher.
Bullying in schools has reached a concerning prevalence within schools, highlighted by the recent tragic incidents that unfolded. The SAHRC notes with concern that cases of bullying are still being reported and it continues to investigate them. These cases come after the SAHRC conducted a hearing into bullying, corporal punishment, and sexual relations between educators and pupils in Limpopo province.
The bullying of learners further adversely affects the rights of minors, including the right to equality, dignity, safety and security, and basic education. It is within this background that the SAHRC found it necessary to visit the school.
