Media Advisory: The SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to conduct a stakeholder engagement on human rights and law enforcement

22 May 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) in the Northern Cape Province will be conducting a stakeholder engagement focused on human rights and law enforcement. The engagement comes in the wake of pressing issues surrounding police brutality, inhumane treatment of inmates, and fatalities within correctional facilities. Recent incidents involving violent confrontations between law enforcement agencies and foreign nationals, as well as reported mistreatment and deaths in Kimberley correctional facilities, have highlighted the urgent need for action.

The stakeholder engagement aims to foster meaningful dialogue and collaborative action towards upholding human rights principles in law enforcement practices. It will bring together key stakeholders, including representatives from law enforcement agencies such as the South African Police Services and the Department of Correctional Services, as well as oversight bodies including the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services. These participants will share their perspectives, discuss their mandates, and explain how they have addressed issues of brutality, mistreatment, and fatalities.

The stakeholder engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date    : Wednesday, 22 May 2024
Time   : 10:00 AM to 13:00 PM
Venue : Garden Court Kimberley (120 Du Toitspan Road), Kimberley

Ends

Prepared by the Northern Cape Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission.
