Access to clean water is crucial for everyone's health, dignity, and prosperity. The Constitution recognises the fundamental importance of water by enshrining the right to access sufficient water.
Municipalities, appointed as water services authorities, have a vital role in providing access to clean water for everyone, especially vulnerable communities.
In response to systemic challenges related to water provision, the SAHRC in Limpopo released a report on October 16, 2023, following an inquiry into water access and the effectiveness of water service authorities in the Limpopo Province. The inquiry was prompted by a growing number of complaints from the public about lack of water access. The report put forward several recommendations aimed at all water services authorities in the Limpopo Province.
Today, the SAHRC in Limpopo will conduct a joint inspection with Polokwane Local Municipality in identified areas, including Wastewater Treatment Plants and Water Sources or Projects. The purpose of the inspection is to verify the information before the SAHRC and assess compliance with the recommendations directed to the Municipality.
