Media Advisory: SAHRC Western Cape Provincial Office hosts inaugural meeting of Chapter 9 bodies in the Western Cape to address service delivery

Attention: Editors and Reporters

12 June 2024

The Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will host the Provincial Heads of Chapter 9 bodies in the Western Cape. The Chapter 9 Forum meeting follows stakeholder engagements of provincial heads of the SAHRC, Electoral Commission, Commission for Gender Equality and Public Protector to discuss the need for collaborations in order to avoid duplicating resources.

It is crucial to build relationships between Chapter 9 bodies to support the development of our democracy and the continued delivery of services by these organisations. The Forum for Institutions Supporting Democracy (FISD) needs to function optimally in order to address human rights challenges in these times of resource constraints.

The Western Cape faces several challenges such as the well documented-housing backlog and crisis of backyard dwellers, unlawful evictions and violent crime. These challenges are systemic in nature and require joint effort in addressing them. The Meeting of the Chapter 9 Forum will therefore seek to facilitate these joint efforts.

As such, the WCPO will therefore convene the meeting as follows

Date: 12 June 2024

Venue: SAHRC Western Cape Provincial Office, 3rd Floor, One Thibault Building, 1 Long Street, Cape Town

Time: 10h00

Ends
