Attention: Editors and Reporters

14 June 2024

Commissioner Aseza Gungubele together with the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) Eastern Cape Provincial Office are conducting monitoring visits to Kouga and Koukamma Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape Province. The engagements are informed by the Commission’s mandate to monitor the observance of human rights.

Monitoring visits started on 12 June 2024 at Kouga Local Municipality to monitor service delivery, housing development, and sewage spillage challenges. On the 13th the team visited Koukamma Local Municipality to monitor water & sanitation challenges, and access to housing.

Today, 14 June 2024, Commissioner Gungubele and the Eastern Cape Provincial Office will meet with Mayors of both municipalities to engage them on the challenges as monitored in the past two days.

The meetings will take place at the respective municipalities as follows:

Venue: Kouga Local Municipality

Time: 10:00

Topic: Service deliver, housing development and sewage spillage.

Venue: Koukamaa Local Municipality

Time: 14:00

These stakeholder engagements present an opportunity to collaborate in addressing service delivery challenges, ensure that human rights considerations are adequately factored into the Integrated Development Planning process and ensure adequate provision is made in the Municipality’s budget to address human rights concerns within the Municipality.
