Date: 24 June 2024
Attention: Editors and Reporters
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Limpopo Provincial Office (LPO) is conducting an inquiry into the impact of mining activities on human rights in specific communities in Limpopo.
This inquiry, to be held from June 25 to 27, 2024, aims to address the continuous complaints of human rights violations related to mining activities, with a particular emphasis on environmental and socio-economic rights.
Over the years the LPO has continuously received and investigated complaints of human rights violations due to mining activities with environmental rights and socio-economic rights being the most allegedly violated. In the mining sector, communities’ socio-economic rights are strongly protected through the requirement to have and comply with social and labour plans. The inquiry aims to investigate further on a systemic level to establish the following:
• The extent of the human rights violations due to mining activities,
• Causes of the violations experienced by the communities,
• Whether the mining houses are responsible for the above violations,
• Whether the regulatory bodies, oversight departments, and other relevant institutions are efficiently carrying out their mandates to ensure that no human rights are violated,
• The systemic nature of the violations set out above.
Mining companies, complainants, relevant government departments, municipalities, and other relevant institutions have been identified to appear and give evidence during the inquiry.
The outcome of this inquiry is expected to facilitate the formulation of findings and recommendations towards achieving redress for human rights concerns.
The hearing will take place as follows:
Dates : 25, 26 and 27 June 2024
Time : 08h00 - 16h30 daily
Venue: Park Inn by Radisson, Polokwane.
The Hearing will be followed by a Media Briefing on 27 June 2024 at 14h00 – 15h00.
