Media Advisory: Eastern Cape Provincial Office will conduct an Imbizo on the Right to Food

Attention: Editors and Reporters

25 June 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is committed to upholding and advancing the right to food security, as enshrined in Section 27 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. This provision states that every citizen is entitled to sufficient food and water. Furthermore, the Constitution imposes a constitutional duty on the state to enact legislative and other measures to progressively realise the right to sufficient food by taking reasonable steps to ensure its full enjoyment. While this right is progressively realised for all citizens, it is an absolute right for children to have access to basic nutrition, as outlined in Section 28(1)(c) of the Constitution.

To address challenges related to food security, the Commission in the Eastern Cape conducted an inquiry in 2022 on challenges relating to severe acute malnutrition. The report can be found on:
https://www.sahrc.org.za/home/21/files/EASTERN%20CAPE%20MALNUTRITION%20REPORT%20FINAL%209.11.23.pdf

With this context in mind and to explore further steps to promote the realisation of the right to access sufficient food, the Commission will conduct an Imbizo under the theme: "Nourishing Futures: Collaborative Strategies for Sustainable Development". The Imbizo aims to convene with stakeholders to foster partnerships, share best practices, identify opportunities for joint initiatives and outline a roadmap towards minimising hunger and tackling hunger collectively. The collective goal is to ensure that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, has access to the nourishment required for a productive and fulfilling life and this will be achieved by exploring and implementing sustainable solutions.

The Imbizo, in a panel discussion format, will consist of stakeholders from various sectors such as the academia, government, development agencies, international bodies, retail sector, financing sector, research bodies, various institutes, business chambers, economic counsel, NPOs, NGOs, CSOs and grassroots role players such as irrigation schemes and subsistence farmers.

The Imbizo will take place as follows:

Date: 25th of June 2024
Time:  08H30 – 17H00
Venue: ICC Hotel/Regent Hotel, East London

- Ends –
