Media Advisory: SAHRC Western Cape Provincial Office hosts a stakeholder engagement on bullying in schools in the Western Cape

Attention: Editors and Reporters

27 June 2024

The Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will host a stakeholder engagement, to address the pervasive and ongoing human rights violations which take place in the form of bullying in schools in the Western Cape.

The WCPO recognizes that bullying in schools is not only a barrier to accessing the right to a basic education but also as a violation of various other rights protected in the Constitution, including but not limited to equality, human dignity, life, freedom and security of the person and children’s rights, amongst others.  In an effort to address the scourge, effects and impact of bullying on both learners and educators, the WCPO will host a stakeholder engagement which will look at current policies in place that are aimed at addressing bullying in schools. In addition, identifying the gaps in the policies in order to understand why bullying remains prevalent in schools despite existing policies. The engagement will therefore focus on addressing any gaps and challenges in existing policies and with the co-operation and assistance of the various relevant stakeholders, look into possible better policy development in order to ensure better regulation of bullying in schools in the Western Cape.

The WCPO will host the stakeholder engagement at the below address:

Date: 27 June 2024

Venue: Southern Sun Hotel, 23 Strand Street, Cape Town.

Time: 08h00 till 14h00

Ends
