Media Advisory: The SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to conduct a stakeholder engagement on promoting and protecting human rights of foreign nationals.

27 June 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

South Africa is home to a diverse population that includes a significant number of foreign nationals, including migrants and refugees. These individuals contribute to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our nation. Despite the legal protections guaranteed by the South African Constitution and international human rights treaties, foreign nationals often face significant challenges, including discrimination, exclusion, xenophobia, and barriers to accessing essential services such as education and healthcare. The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is committed to addressing these challenges and recognises that addressing them requires a concerted and collaborative effort from all sectors of society.

It is against this backdrop that Commission in the Northern Cape Province will be conducting a stakeholder engagement focused on promoting and protecting the human rights of foreign nationals. The stakeholder engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date    : Thursday, 27 June 2024

Time   : 10:00 AM to 13:00 PM

Venue : Hybrid (Microsoft Teams Meeting and Nare Boutique Hotel, 2 Halkett Rd,

              New Park, Kimberley

The engagement aims to:

  • identify and address key issues affecting foreign nationals.
  • review and propose improvements to existing policies and legal frameworks.
  • develop strategies to combat xenophobia and promote social cohesion.
  • strengthen partnerships between various stakeholders to support the rights and well-being of foreign nationals.

Ends
