Media Advisory: SAHRC Free State Provincial Office will convene a stakeholder engagement on teenage pregnancy.

The Free State Provincial Office (FSPO) convened a stakeholder engagement on teenage pregnancy in 2023, prompted by concerning statistics from the Free State Department of Health. The data indicated that between 2002 and 2003, 150 young girls between the ages of 10 and 14 gave birth in a four-month period in the province.

Since then, the FSPO has engaged with government departments and various stakeholders, including Human Rights Champions, to address this issue. Collaborative efforts have resulted in the health department developing terms of reference for addressing youth health, including teenage pregnancy. Furthermore, the Department of Social Development has been guiding the Provincial Inter-Sector Child Care and Protection Forum, in which the FSPO plays an active role.

The Commission has been closely monitoring these intervention measures. As a proactive step, the stakeholder engagement to be convened by the Commission will provide a valuable platform to measure the progress made in addressing teenage pregnancy in the province. .
