Media Advisory: The Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) will host a Stakeholder Engagement at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital following the death of a patient.

The Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will be hosting a stakeholder engagement in response to a fire incident that led to the death of a patient at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.

According to the Gauteng Department of Health, the incident took place in the female psychiatric unit around 18h35 on Monday, where the patient had been secluded. The patient was subsequently declared deceased by a medical doctor on the scene.

The GPO will be meeting with the CEO and other relevant stakeholders of Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital to gather more information about the incident and to conduct an inspection at the hospital. This is part of the Commission’s investigation into the matter to ensure that adequate steps are taken.
