Media Statement: SAHRC Condemns Theft of School Roof at Mmanjaakgora Primary School

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Wednesday, 10 July 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission) strongly condemns the theft of the school roof affecting three classrooms at Mmanjaakgora Primary School in Prisca village, Moretele, which was discovered on July 6, 2024.

The theft of the school roof is a criminal act and a violation of the right to education enshrined in Section 29 of the Constitution. The Commission further expresses dismay at such behavior, especially given the harsh winter conditions and the impending return of children to school.

The Commission commends MEC Viola Motsumi for her rapid response, arranging temporary facilities to ensure that learners in Grades R, 1, 2, and 3 can continue their education without interruption during the harsh winter season.

The SAHRC urges the South African Police Service to address this criminal act swiftly. The Commission equally calls on the community of Moretele to assist the police in apprehending those responsible for this egregious act.

The SAHRC remains committed to protecting the rights of all children and ensuring access to quality education for every child. Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana, SAHRC Commissioner responsible for Children’s Rights and the North West province, together with the North West Provincial Office, will monitor developments on this matter to ensure that criminals are brought to justice. Children learn best when they feel safe and valued.
