Media Advisory: SAHRC KZN Provincial Office conducts Children’s Rights and Human Rights Champions Workshops

10 July 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The KwaZulu Natal Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or the Commission) has partnered with the Sthabile Community Development Centre to conduct a children's rights workshop for the learner representative councils of Mvaba High School and Nkosinathi Secondary School.

This workshop aims to educate the children about their rights and responsibilities, as well as raise awareness about issues such as child abuse, bullying, sexual abuse, school violence, and human trafficking. The workshop will also cover the role of the Commission's Child Rights Unit and the Child Friendly Complaints Handling Procedures. The learner representative councils and prefects will be equipped to address human rights issues in their schools and communities and will be empowered to identify human rights violations and how to access justice in such situations.

Additionally, the SAHRC, in collaboration with the University of Zululand (UniZulu), will be conducting a follow-up workshop for human rights champions from UniZulu's KwaDlangezwa Campus. The workshop aims to refresh the champions on their roles, assess progress on activities and interventions implemented, and to also finalise the plan for future implementation.

The activities will be conducted as follows:
