Media Advisory: The SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Office in collaboration with the Tshwane University of Technology is hosting a Dialogue to Unpack the July Unrest Report and to Discuss the National Question.

Attention: Editors and Reporters

25 July 2024

The Gauteng Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in collaboration with the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is hosting a dialogue to unpack the National Investigative Hearing Report into the July 2021 Unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal (July Unrest Report).

Initially released in January 2024 in KwaZulu Natal, the July Unrest Report will now be launched for the second time in Gauteng, a province that also experienced the impact of the unrest. This dialogue aims to serve as a platform for deep reflection on the report and to draw insights as the nation marks the third anniversary of the unrest.

Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi, who is responsible for Antiracism, Equality, Justice & Education focal areas will deliver a keynote address offering the Commission’s perspectives on the anniversary of the July Unrest.

The July Unrest highlighted the persistent racial tensions in South Africa and emphasised the need for an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach to addressing the deeply rooted social ills and prejudices. The launch of the July Unrest Report aims to spark discussions on how to promote social harmony and national unity in South Africa.

The dialogue will be live-streamed.

The details of the dialogue are as follows:

Date:               26 July 2024

Time:               10:00-13:00
