Media Advisory: The SAHRC Eastern Cape Provincial Office undertakes activities concerning service delivery concerns and climate change

Attention: Editors and Reporters

6 August 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) is undertaking series of activities in the Makana Local Municipality with a particular focus on service delivery concerns. A significant initiative this week involves engaging responsible stakeholders on the persisting challenge of access to water in the Makana Local Municipality. Access to water refers to the ability of individuals and communities to obtain safe, sufficient, and affordable water for drinking, sanitation, and other basic needs. The Constitution provides that the state must make water accessible in a progressively realisable manner.

Additionally, the ECPO will conduct a calendar day dialogue on the climate change crisis: young women as agents of change. Young women are emerging as powerful agents of change due to the unique perspectives, innovative approaches and strong commitment to environmental justice. The participation of young women is one of the ways to ensure that there is a significant drive towards progress in the fight against climate change which is a threat to human rights especially the right to life. We will have about 40 female learners from schools from quintiles 1 to 5 from the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.  The schools will prepare on various themes and give their inputs, perspectives.

The Commission will also appear in the Makhanda High Court on an application to be admitted as amicus curiae on a case on the lack of scholar transport for children in the province against the Department of Education. This application will be followed by the official hearing of the case.
