Media Advisory: The SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to conduct an engagement with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development

26 August 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) in the Northern Cape Province will be conducting an engagement with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ & CD) to discuss and address the functionality of equality courts within the Northern Cape Province. This engagement is part of a broader initiative to enhance access to justice, particularly in cases related to unfair discrimination, hate speech, and harassment.

The engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date    : Monday, 26 June 2024

Time   : 10:00 AM to 13:00 PM

Venue : Protea Hotel Kimberley (Kimberley Big Hole - W Circular Rd), Kimberley

Equality courts play an important role in upholding the principles of equality enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. However, there have been concerns regarding their accessibility and effectiveness, particularly in rural and marginalised communities. The engagement aims to explore practical solutions to these challenges and reinforce the commitment of both the Commission and the DoJ & CD in advancing human rights in the Northern Cape province.

The objectives of the engagement are to:

  • Review the operational status and challenges faced by equality courts in the Northern Cape Province.
  • Discuss strategies to increase public awareness and improve access to these courts for all citizens.
  • Strengthen the partnership between the Commission and the DoJ & CD to ensure that equality courts are equipped to serve their intended purpose effectively.
