Media Advisory: The SAHRC’s North West Provincial Office to conduct a subpoena hearing against the Department of Human Settlement

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Thursday, 12 September 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) North West Provincial Office (NWPO) will conduct a subpoena hearing against, Ms Kgomotso Mahlobo, the Head of Department (HOD) of the North West Department of Human Settlements.

The subpoena hearing pertains to two long-standing complaints investigated by the NWPO against the Department. One of them involves an elderly woman living in a dilapidated mud house lacking basic amenities such as a toilet. She alleged that despite  an undertaking from the Premier's office to build a new house for her  under the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing program,  she is yet to be provided with a befitting home.

The NWPO addressed numerous correspondences to the Department concerning this matter. The Department failed to respond to the various correspondences. Consequently, the NWPO initiated these proceedings to advance the investigations and work toward resolving the matters.

The subpoena proceedings are scheduled as follows:

  • Date : Friday, 13 September 2024
  • Time : 09:00
  • Venue: 25 Heystek Street, Rustenburg.
