Attention: Editors and Reporters
Tuesday, 24 September 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission), through its National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) coordination role, will be participating as an observer at the 14th Annual Funda Mzantsi Championship set to take place in George, Western Cape.

This event which is collaboratively organised by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), National Library of South Africa (NLSA) - Centre for the Book and the George Municipality, will run from 23 to 27 September 2024. The Funda Mzantsi Championship brings together a diverse group of participants, including inmates, community book clubs, university students, and school learners, to celebrate and showcase their literary skills in a dynamic and educational forum.

The Championship is a unique national initiative that highlights the transformative power of literature and promotes a culture of reading. Participants, representing various regions, languages, and backgrounds, will compete in four main categories: impromptu reading, debating, spelling bee, and book reviewing. This year’s event promises to be a spirited display of talent, fostering not only a love for books and storytelling but also promoting social cohesion, literacy, and critical thinking skills across diverse communities.

In addition to the observer status, the Commission has sponsored the english debating topic being, culture as a human right. This topic will allow participants to engage on the significance of Heritage Day. The participants will also engage the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, other national and international instruments and best practices to support their arguments on whether traditional culture and human rights are compatible.

The Commission’s presence underscores its ongoing commitment to human rights advocacy, particularly in places of deprivation of liberty, and its dedication to supporting educational and rehabilitative programs aimed at empowering marginalised groups, including those in correctional facilities. Through this engagement the Commission aims to highlight the importance of literacy as a tool for personal and community development, especially among vulnerable populations.

Everyone is welcome to see the 14th Annual Funda Mzantsi Championship take place live on the DCS TV South Africa Youtube Channel.
