Media Advisory: The SAHRC’s Western Cape Provincial Office will host an engagement regarding challenges affecting learners with special educational needs in the Western Cape

Wednesday, 25 September 2024
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) will host an engagement with stakeholders in the Education sector regarding challenges experienced in securing appropriate services for learners with special educational needs (LSEN) in the Western Cape.

The stakeholder engagement is planned as follows:

  • Date : Thursday, 26 September 2024
  • Time : 08h30 to 15h30
  • Venue: 3rd Floor, One Thibault, 1 Long Street, Cape Town

The WCPO has called together stakeholders in the province including the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) as the duty bearer, academic experts, and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) operating in the LSEN sphere with a view to developing a cohesive plan for addressing the identified challenges. This follows complaints from parents relating to systematic challenges experienced by learners with special educational needs in the province.

The challenges encompass identification of learners with special educational needs, and determining whether concerned learners should remain in mainstream schools or be diverted to special needs schools? Furthermore, the engagement will look into the lack of availability of special needs schools, the complexity of the process, and other pertinent issues will be discussed. Lastly, the session will seek solutions to the identified systemic challenges.
