Wednesday, 25 September 2024
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) Northern Cape Provincial Office (NCPO) will be conducting a stakeholder engagement with traditional councils in the province to address key issues relating to traditional practices, human rights, and the role of traditional authorities in a democratic dispensation.

The stakeholder engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

  • Date : Thursday, 26 September 2024
  • Time : 10:00 AM to 13:00 PM
  • Venue : Kuruman Inn (C/o Main and De Jager Streets), Kuruman

The engagement aims to foster dialogue on traditional leadership's evolving role in promoting and protecting human rights, particularly in light of the constitutional mandate of South Africa’s democratic framework. Key areas of discussion will include the functionality of traditional courts, the intersection of gender equality and traditional practices, and the impact of the Traditional and Khoisan Leadership Act No. 03 of 2019, together with the Traditional Court Act No. 09 of 2022.

The engagement will bring together the following key stakeholders:

  • Traditional leaders from various councils across the Northern Cape.
  • Representatives from the Northern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs.
  • The Commission for Gender Equality,
  • The Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic Rights Commission.

The media is invited to attend the stakeholder engagement and report on the discussions.
