Media Alert: SAHRC’s Free State Provincial Office to commemorate International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Thursday, 17 October 2024

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17, established by the UN General Assembly in 1992, it commemorates a 1987 gathering in Paris advocating for the rights of those living in poverty. This year's theme is "Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment", emphasising the need for collective action against societal discrimination. The day encourages dialogue, raises awareness, and highlights the importance of empowering marginalised communities to combat poverty effectively.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) Free State Provincial Office (FSPO) highlights alarming food insecurity levels in the Free State, particularly among children. The SAHRC has called for coordinated efforts among government and civil society to ensure the right to sufficient food for all, advocating for urgent action to combat hunger and malnutrition.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda continue to prioritise poverty reduction. This year's official commemoration hosted by the FSPO, will provide a platform for individuals to engage with key departments, aiming to collaboratively develop strategies and recommendations for eradicating poverty.  It is imperative that the SAHRC continue to play a crucial role in addressing poverty through its mandate.
