Media Advisory: SAHRC’S Western Cape Provincial Office will host a dialogue with various stakeholders including learners, teachers, and parents regarding racism in schools in the Western Cape

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Friday, 18 October 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/the Commission) Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) has over the past few years noted a significant number of media reports concerning allegations of racist incidents in schools in the Western Cape Province (WCP), as well as throughout the country.

In an effort to address the scourge, effects, and impact of racism in schools in the Western Cape, the WCPO will host and facilitate a dialogue aimed at probing the possible root causes, that 30 years into democracy, racist incidents remain on the rise in schools.

The proposed dialogue will be attended by experts in the field of racism, school principals, teachers, learner representatives, and parents, for the purposes of engaging in a positive dialogue where each of the parties will be provided a platform, to reflect on these behaviours, for the purposes of establishing what role each party may be playing, whether they are aware of this or not, which further perpetuates the system.

The dialogue will include various role players, including but not limited to the National Department of Basic Education, Western Cape Education Department (WCED), experts from Stellenbosch University, experts from the University of Cape Town, and experts from the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation.

The WCPO will host the stakeholder engagement at the below address:

  • Date   :  Monday, 21 October 2024
  • Venue : Southern Sun Hotel, 23 Strand Street, Cape Town.
  • Time   :  08h00am until 17h00

Ends
