Media Advisory: SAHRC proceeds with litigation against Mr Renaldo Gouws for alleged hate speech

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Wednesday, 20 November 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) has instituted legal proceedings under the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 2000 against Mr. Renaldo Gouws.

This action stems from a video in which Mr. Renaldo Gouws allegedly calls for the killing of Black people, using highly offensive and derogatory language. The video, originally published on his YouTube channel in March 2010, was later deleted but has since resurfaced through archived content, highlighting conduct that stands in stark contrast to the principles of dignity and equality enshrined in South African law.

A directions hearing is scheduled to take place in the Gqeberha High Court, sitting as an Equality Court, to determine the procedural course of the matter. The hearing details are as follows:

  • Date : Thursday, 21 November 2024
  • Time : 09H30
  • Venue: High Court Gqeberha, Number 2 Bird Street, Gqeberha, 6006.

The Commission emphasises the critical importance of fostering a society rooted in non-discrimination, while actively promoting and safeguarding the right to equality for all individuals, irrespective of their race.
