Media Advisory: The Eastern Cape Provincial Office will conduct a stakeholder engagement on human rights at Psychiatry Facilities

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Friday, 22 November 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is committed to upholding and advancing the right to health, as enshrined in Section 27 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. This provision states that every citizen is entitled to access health care service and for these services to be provided with human dignity and equality.

As such, the Easter Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will conduct a stakeholder engagement focused on advancing human rights in the context of mental healthcare at psychiatry facilities. The stakeholder engagement will bring together a diverse group of participants, including, health care professionals, government departments, the legal sector, service users, and representatives from civil society organisations.

This stakeholder engagement is aimed at strengthening the understanding and application of human rights principles in psychiatric care. It will provide a platform for open dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaborative problem-solving on pressing issues related to mental health, dignity, and equity.

Key topics of discussion will include:

  • Upholding the rights and dignity of individuals receiving mental health care.
  • Addressing stigma and discrimination within psychiatric facilities.
  • Promoting informed consent and ensuring ethical treatment practices.
  • Strategies to align mental health services with international human rights standards.

The Commission is committed to fostering partnerships that prioritise human rights in mental health and other critical sectors.

The stakeholder engagement will take place as follows:

  • Date: Friday, 22 November 2024
  • Time: 10H00 – 13H00
  • Venue: Elizabeth Donkin Hospital Psychiatric Department, Gqeberha
