Media Advisory: SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office hosts an Indaba Towards Social Harmony, Safety and Nation-building on and Around Farms in Limpopo

Date: Friday, 22 November 2024
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/ the Commission) Limpopo Provincial Office has in the past years received many complaints from farming communities related to violations of human rights. Recently, two black women were allegedly shot and fed to pigs by a white farmer and two of his workers at a farm outside Polokwane, in Limpopo. The SAHRC is concerned with the impact of farming incidents on and around farming communities on social harmony and nation-building and as a result will host an Indaba towards social harmony, safety, and nation-building on and around farms in Limpopo Province.

The Indaba brings together diverse stakeholders, including government departments, non- governmental organisations, farmers, farm workers, trade and farming unions, religious and faith-based organisations, academia, and community leaders. The Indaba aims to foster dialogues on current landscape, share experiences, and best practices to help to collaborate on strategies to combat violence in farming communities. The Indaba will bring about collaborative solutions on social harmony, safety, and nation-building on and around farms in Limpopo Province.

The initiative aligns with the SAHRC's broader efforts under the Social Harmony through National Effort (SHiNE), which emphasises mutual respect, compassion, and dialogue to address historical and systemic inequities while promoting constitutional values.

The Indaba takes place as the country observes the 16 Days of Activism on No Violence Against Women and Children. The SAHRC is a state institution established by Chapter 9 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 to support constitutional democracy. The SAHRC is mandated in terms of Section 184 of the Constitution to promote the protection, development, and attainment of human rights, and to monitor the observance of such rights within the Republic of South Africa.

The Indaba is to be held as follows:

  • Dates: 26, 27, and 28 November 2024
  • Time: 08h30 – 16h30
  • Place : Park Inn by Radisson, Polokwane
