Media Advisory: The SAHRC’s Gauteng Provincial Office to conduct a subpoena hearing against the Mogale City Local Municipality

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Thursday, 26 November 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) will conduct a subpoena hearing against, Lucky Godfrey Sele, the Executive Mayor of the Mogale City Local Municipality.

The subpoena hearing concerns various complaints lodged and being investigated by the GPO on its own accord relating to human rights violations within the municipality’s jurisdiction. One of them involves the municipality's unlawful evictions and confiscation of the property of homeless people.

Since 2021, the GPO has addressed numerous correspondences to the municipality concerning these matters. To date, the municipality has failed to respond to the various correspondences. Consequently, the GPO initiated these proceedings to advance the investigations and work toward resolving the matters.

The subpoena proceedings are scheduled as follows:

  • Date:               Tuesday, 26 November 2024
  • Time:               11:00
  • Venue:            Sentinel House, 32 Princess of Wales Terrace, Parktown.
