Media Advisory: SAHRC ends week-long provincial visit in Mpumalanga

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Date: Friday, 06 December 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission) led by Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana conducted a weeklong provincial visit in Mpumalanga from 02-06 December 2024. In line with her focal areas on Older Persons, Disability, and Children, Commissioner Khwinana together with the Mpumalanga Provincial Office monitored older persons homes at Sabie and Secunda; equality courts in Standerton and Witbank, and Thaduxolo Specialised School in eMalahleni. Commissioner Khwinana also delivered a keynote address during a commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Mbombela.

During the provincial visit, the Commission was able to track, and document human rights issues faced by older persons, children, and persons with disabilities. In addition, monitored access to equality courts in both Standerton and eMalahleni.

Amongst others, the SAHRC made the following observations: (1) lack of monitoring of private older persons homes by the Department of Social Development, particularly the impact of rental rates, evictions, and other standards outlined in the Older Persons Act (2) lack of monitoring of Equality Courts. (3) lack of comprehensive legislative framework to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities. These human rights issues will be reported to the implicated government departments.
