Media Advisory: The SAHRC’s Northern Cape Provincial Office to host a stakeholder engagement on human settlements in the Northern Cape Province

Wednesday, 05 February 2025
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission) in the Northern Cape Province will host a stakeholder engagement on human settlements to assess the realisation of the right to adequate housing in the Northern Cape province.

The engagement follows systemic challenges in informal settlements, slow housing delivery, and concerns following the launch of the R1 Billion Human Settlement Project in the Northern Cape by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Hon Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday, 18 January 2024 in Kimberley. The R1 Billion Human Settlement Project was aimed at reducing housing backlogs in the Northern Cape by building over 4, 000 houses over a period of 12 to 18 months.

The engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

  • Date: Thursday, 06 February 2025
  • Time: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Venue: Garden Court Kimberley (120 Du Toitspan Road), Kimberley

The engagement will provide a platform for key stakeholders to discuss the state of housing, the upgrading of informal settlements, infrastructure development, and the role of local and provincial government in ensuring access to adequate housing and related services.

 Key Issues to be discussed:

  • Systemic challenges in housing, including water, sanitation, and electricity services.
  • Status of incomplete housing projects in areas such as De Aar, Victoria West, Williston, Wrenchville, and Kimberley.
  • The plans by the Departments of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs for housing development using the allocated R1 billion funding.
  • The role of municipalities, provincial and national governments in planning and implementing housing solutions.
  • Oversight and accountability measures to ensure housing budgets are properly utilised.
  • Alternative strategies for addressing the housing backlog and informal settlements.

Commissioner Aseza Gungubele, who is responsible for Human Settlements, Migration, and Climate Justice at the Commission will lead the engagement.
