Media Alert: The South African Human Rights Commission’s Limpopo Provincial Office holds a dialogue on mining and human rights with Traditional Leaders

Date: Wednesday, 26 February 2025
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) Limpopo Provincial Office (LPO) will be holding a dialogue on mining and human rights with traditional leaders.

The LPO receives various complaints from mining communities alleging violations of human rights due to mining activities. Traditional leaders were identified among role players who can play a significant role in the enjoyment and protection of human rights in mining communities. Before and during mining operations, traditional leaders assume the roles of community liaisons, land rights negotiators, employment advocates, and community development leaders and they also facilitate dispute resolutions.

It is for the above reasons that the SAHRC intends to hold a dialogue on mining and human rights with traditional leaders. The dialogue will further capacitate traditional leaders on business and human rights.

The dialogue will be held as follows:

  • Date: 26 February 2025
  • Venue: Thaba Moshate Hotel, Casino, and Convention Resort, Burgersfort
  • Time: 08h00 – 16h00
